<br />I. PURPOSE
<br />
<br />The purpose of this policy is to establish procedures for the use of the Surprise
<br />Alert System.
<br />
<br />II. POLICY
<br />
<br />The policy of the Surprise Police Department is to utilize the Traffic Alert System
<br />(TAS), Surprise Emergency Alert System (SEAS) and Reverse 9-1-1 to notify
<br />citizens of traffic conditions that may affect roadway travel or emergency
<br />incidents that may benefit or protect citizens of Surprise by having knowledge of
<br />these situations. These notifications will also utilize social media outlets such as
<br />Twitter and Facebook to reach the public.

<br />III. DEFINITIONS
<br />
<br />Emergency Alert Computerized Internet-based program used in
<br />the process of notifying subscribers of
<br />emergency situations involving missing and/or
<br />endangered persons.
<br />Reverse 9-1-1 A Public Safety Communications System used
<br />to rapidly notify an affected area of an
<br />emergency by sending a recorded message by
<br />telephone to a group of people in a designated
<br />geographic area(s).
<br />Social Media Highly accessible web-based media outlets used
<br />for the purpose of sharing information.
<br />Supervisor A sworn officer of the rank of Sergeant or above.
<br />Surprise Emergency Alert Computerized Internet-based program, used in
<br />the process of notifying subscribers of
<br />System (SEAS)
<br />emergency situations that may impact citizens of
<br />Surprise.
<br />Traffic Alert System (TAS) Computerized Internet-based program, used in
<br />the process of notifying subscribers of traffic
<br />situations that may impede the normal flow of
<br />traffic in the City of Surprise.
