I. PURPOSE

The Surprise Police Department endorses the secure use of social media to
enhance communication, collaboration and information exchange; streamline
processes; and foster productivity. The use of social media, such as, Facebook,
MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn and various social blogging sites have become
common outlets for members to socialize. The purpose of this policy is to
establish policy and procedure on the use of social media by members of this
Department, explain the utility and management of social media, and provide
guidance on its management, administration, and oversight. This policy is not
meant to address one particular form of social media, rather social media in
general, as advances in technology will occur and new tools will emerge.

II. POLICY

The policy of the Surprise Police Department is to provide a new and potentially
valuable means of assisting the Department and its members in meeting
community outreach, problem-solving, investigative, crime prevention and related
objectives through the use of social media. This policy identifies potential uses
that may be explored or expanded upon as deemed reasonable by
administrative and supervisory personnel. The Department also recognizes the
role that these tools play in the personal lives of some Department members.
The personal use of social media can have bearing on Department members in
their official capacity. Members need to understand the negative impact of
inappropriate or unauthorized use of social media involving the Department or its
members and the direct impact on the relationship between the Department and
the community. As such, this policy provides information of a precautionary
nature as well as prohibitions on the use of social media by Department
members.
