PURPOSE <br /> <br />This directive establishes policy and procedures for the Training Unit. <br /> <br />II. POLICY <br /> <br />The policy of the Surprise Police Department is that the Training Unit will <br />oversee all department training needs. The Training Unit will: <br /> <br />A. Train all Department employees in a manner that enables them to perform <br />their job duties at an acceptable level. <br />B. Document and record all training and attendance. <br />C. Utilize the following training programs to meet department training needs: <br /> <br />1. Recruit Training All Surprise Police Officers must complete a <br />basic police officer academy. The basic police academy consists <br />of a designated number of training hours as specified by the <br />Academy Director. The curriculum, approved by the Arizona Peace <br />Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST), uses techniques <br />designed to evaluate and measure competency in the required <br />skills, knowledge and abilities on the most critical or frequently <br />occurring jobs performed by police officers. The Department will <br />use available regional academies, which are mandated to provide <br />basic police officer training for non-certified recruits at no cost to <br />law enforcement agencies throughout the State of Arizona. <br />2. Recruit Training Officer (RTO) On a rotational basis and as <br />staffing allows, SPD provides a full-time RTO on-site at the <br />Academy who serves as a liaison for the Department in identifying <br />training needs for recruits. Additionally, the Training Unit Sergeant <br />and Recruitment Officer maintain continuous contact with the <br />Academy staff when recruits are in attendance to monitor the <br />progress of the recruit and identify pre-and post-academy training <br />needs to <br />The Division Commander over the Training Unit shall be a member <br />of the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy User Advisory Group <br />and regularly attend quarterly meetings to enhance the <br />communication between SPD and the Academy.
