PURPOSE <br /> <br />The purpose of this policy is to establish procedures for the Department’s role in <br /> <br /> criminal justice and social service diversion programs. (1.1.3) <br /> <br />II. POLICY <br /> <br />The policy of the Surprise Police Department is to maintain effective channels of <br />communication with other law enforcement and service-providing agencies as a <br />means of providing the appropriate level of service to its citizens and other <br />individuals encountered who are in need of assistance. This includes referral to <br />an agency or agencies best suited to meet their needs. (1.1.3) <br /> <br />III. PROCEDURE <br /> <br />The Department will provide, whenever possible, up-to-date referral services to <br />the citizens it serves. Department members should make every effort to provide <br />the information on agencies providing support, assistance, and information <br />whenever requested. <br /> <br />A. Telephone Numbers <br /> <br /> 1. Members should utilize the various telephone directories available <br />throughout the Department. <br /> <br /> a. When it is necessary to contact another City Department for <br />assistance during non-business hours, members will contact <br />the Communications Section. <br /> b. The Communications Section will retain a current contact list <br />for emergency assistance from other City Departments (e.g., <br />Public Works for traffic lights or road hazards, Traffic <br />Engineering for road design and traffic flow, etc.). <br /> <br />2. Members will provide referral information to citizens in need of the <br />following types of services including, but not limited to: (1.1.3) <br /> <br /> a. Aid to destitute persons <br /> b. Chemical dependency <br /> c. Family counseling and mental health assistance <br /> d. Legal advice (employees will not provide legal advice on civil <br />problems but should refer the individual to the appropriate <br /> <br />
