<br />I. PURPOSE
<br />
<br /> The purpose of this policy is to establish procedures in order to provide restricted
<br />duty assignments to personnel within the Surprise Police Department when they
<br />are temporarily unable to perform all essential duties of their position due to an
<br />illness, injury or other restriction.
<br />
<br />II. POLICY
<br />
<br /> The policy of the Surprise Police Department is that personnel may be assigned
<br />to a restricted duty assignment for any of the following reasons, including but not
<br />limited to:
<br />
<br />A. When an employee has suffered an injury or illness, whether work-related
<br />or non-work related, and as a result is not immediately able to return to full
<br />duty and is placed on a Return to Work Agreement.
<br />B. When an employee is placed on administrative leave during an internal
<br />investigation.
<br />C. When an employee is given an alternative assignment due to
<br />extraordinary circumstances.

<br />III. DEFINITIONS
<br />
<br />Administrative Leave Paid leave given at the discretion of the Chief of
<br />Police or designee, usually directed during an
<br />administrative investigation.
<br />Serious Physical Injury A bodily injury that creates a substantial risk of
<br />death, causes serious or permanent
<br />disfigurement, or results in long-term loss or
<br />impairment of the functioning of any bodily
<br />member or organ.

<br />IV. RETURN TO WORK (RTW) AGREEMENTS
<br />
<br />A. Workplace Injuries/Illnesses. An employee who sustains an injury/illness
<br />within the scope of employment, must comply with EPM 7.3 – Workplace
<br />Injury Reporting and must participate in the RTW Program. Refusal to
<br />participate in the RTW program may result in the employee’s ineligibility
<br />for wage continuation and/or disability compensation.
