<br />I. PURPOSE
<br />The Department awards program is designed to recognize members of the
<br />Surprise Police Department for exceptional performance and service by either
<br />commendation or award. (26.1.2)
<br />II. POLICY
<br />To be eligible for any award, conduct must be in keeping with sound judgment
<br />and reflect honorably upon the police profession. The policy of the Surprise
<br />Police Department is that Department members may be awarded with a
<br />supervisory recognition, Department commendation, Department certificate,
<br />coin, trophy, award pin, or ribbon and/or monetary supplement, if
<br />applicable.
<br />III. DEPARTMENT AND EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR AWARDS
<br />Department Awards
<br />A. - The Department may present an employee with
<br />the following awards: (26.1.2)
<br />
<br />Medal of Valor
<br />1. - Thaward that may be
<br />awarded to any member of the Department who distinguish
<br />themselves by conspicuous bravery or heroism, above and beyond
<br />the normal demand of duty. To be awarded the Medal of Valor, a
<br />member must have performed an act displaying extreme courage
<br />while consciously facing imminent peril. The conferring of an award
<br />for bravery shall be in recognition of a single action performed by an
<br />officer, reserve officer, non-sworn employee, or volunteer.
<br />Nominations for this award must be submitted to the Awards
<br />Committee for approval by the Chief of Police. This recognition
<br />consists of a medal, Department certificate, and award pin.
<br />Medal of Merit
<br />2. - Awarded to an employee for an act of courage and
<br />dedication to duty during the actual performance of a police service
<br />involving significant risk or danger to personal safety. Nominations
<br />for this award must be submitted to the Awards Committee for
<br />approval by the Chief of Police. This recognition consists of a medal,
<br />Department certificate, and award pin.
