PURPOSE <br /> <br />This policy identifies the Department's authorized primary, secondary, special <br />firearms, ammunition, less-lethal weapons, and firearm equipment/accessories <br />that may be carried/utilized by authorized Department members. Additionally, <br />this policy designates responsibilities pertaining to the authorization, issuance, <br />and maintenance of these weapons. <br /> <br />II. POLICY <br /> <br />It is the policy of the Surprise Police Department to: <br /> <br />A. Maintain a Department-authorized weapons list. <br />B. Issue a primary duty weapon and ammunition for that weapon to <br />authorized members of the Department. <br />C. Maintain special firearms. <br />D. Authorize personally-owned secondary weapons for carry by authorized <br />members while on-duty, off-duty, or while working off-duty in a law <br />enforcement capacity. <br />E. Authorize less-lethal weapons for carry and use by authorized members <br />of the Department. <br />F. Authorize firearm equipment and accessories to include, but not limited to, <br />optics/sighting systems, flash/sound suppressors, and weapon-mounted <br />illumination systems. <br />G. Conduct periodic inspections to determine operational condition of <br />weapons, and ensure only authorized weapons are being carried by <br />Department members. <br /> <br />III. DEFINITIONS <br /> <br />TERM DEFINITION <br />User-actuated retention device or system which has to be <br />Holster <br />engaged in order to release the weapon from the holster <br />Retention - <br />(e.g., thumb snap, rotating hood, rocking weapon forward). <br />Active <br />Retention inherent to the holster by virtue of its design and <br />Holster <br />construction (e.g., compression) which enable it to retain <br />Retention <br />the weapon without having any active retention devices or <br />Passive <br />systems. <br /> <br /> <br />
