PURPOSE <br /> <br />The purpose of this policy is to offer impartial assistance to family members of <br />officers of the Surprise Police Department who die or who are seriously injured in <br />the line-of-duty. Services will be provided in accordance with available <br />resources, considering factors such as the Department’s primary roll to provide <br />public safety to the community. <br /> <br />II. POLICY <br /> <br />The policy of the Surprise Police Department is to provide assistance, if desired, <br />to the immediate survivors of an officer who dies, or who is seriously injured, in <br />the line of duty, with support including funeral and benefit arrangements. At the <br />direction of the Chief of Police, portions of this policy may be activated for off- <br />duty deaths (not line-of-duty), retired officer’s death, death of a civilian employee <br />or volunteer, or line-of-duty death of an officer from a different jurisdiction. <br /> <br />III. DEFINITIONS <br /> <br /> <br />A.For the purpose of this policy, the following definitions will apply. The <br /> <br />definitions listed are not all inclusive. <br /> <br /> 1. Line-of-Duty Death: A death of an active officer that dies <br />accidentally or feloniously while performing work related functions <br />either on or off-duty. <br /> 2. Survivors: The deceased or injured officer’s spouse, children, <br />parents, siblings, fiancé, or significant other. <br /> 3. Serious Injury: A medical condition incurred accidentally or <br />feloniously while performing work related functions on or off-duty <br />that is considered life threatening, career ending, or a permanent <br />disability. <br /> 4. Department Support Officer: An officer from the Command Staff <br />assigned by the Chief of Police to coordinate the Surprise Police <br />Department’s support to the survivors and supervise the Family <br />Support Officer, Funeral Liaison Officer, Benefits Coordination <br />Officer and the Public Information Officer in their duties. The <br />Department Support Officer will update the Chief of Police and <br />Command Staff of coordinating efforts being made. <br /> 5. Family Support Officer: A Department employee assigned by the <br />Department Support Officer to stay with the survivors, provide <br />support, and act as an immediate liaison between the family and <br /> <br />
