PURPOSE <br />The purpose of this policy is to establish procedures regarding the organization, <br />functions, duties, and utilization of police department canines. <br /> <br />II. POLICY <br /> <br />A. The policy of the Surprise Police Department is to staff, train, deploy, and <br />maintain police canines to serve as support for department functions such as <br />patrol, investigations, and community relations, and to provide aid and <br />comfort for crime victims and department members. Canine/handler teams <br />(K-9 Teams) will perform two functions: <br /> <br />1. Police service canines will be used for searches (structures, people, <br />areas, articles, contraband, explosives) tracking, crowd control, <br />criminal apprehensions, public relations demonstrations, and other <br />duties as assigned. (41.1.5.a) <br />2. Police facility canines will assist in the aid and comfort of crime victims <br />and first responders who have experienced critical or traumatic <br />events, as well as department members who experience the <br />cumulative stress of police work. (41.1.5.a) <br /> <br />III. DEFINITIONS <br /> <br />TERM DEFINITION <br />Canine A trained police canine owned and utilized by the Surprise <br />(K-9) Police Department and assigned to a handler as part of a <br />canine team. <br />Canine Bite Any <br />Canine A sergeant or lieutenant whose primary duties include <br />Supervisor direct supervision of canine team(s). <br />Canine Team One Surprise Police Department employee/handler and <br />(K-9 Team) their assigned canine. <br />Canine Trainer A sworn handler with the Surprise Police Department who <br />has attended an AZPOST certified canine instructor course <br />and is responsible to oversee and review the training of the <br /> <br />Explosive A canine that is specifically trained in the detection of <br />Detection Canine explosives. <br />(EDC) <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
